Just a block back from the Broadwater, our Southport children are lucky to have one of the Gold Coast's most beautiful classrooms right on their doorstep — the outdoors. Each week, our educators lead Beach Kinder: a nature-play program where learning happens in the sand, the shade and the open air.

If you've ever wondered why "just playing outside" matters so much in early learning, here's what's really going on — and why it's one of the things Southport families tell us they love most.

What is Beach Kinder?

Beach Kinder is our version of "bush kinder," reimagined for our coastal home. Instead of a fixed indoor lesson, children explore a natural environment with gentle guidance from their educators. They dig, build, balance, collect, wonder and ask questions — and the learning follows their curiosity.

Open-ended play in nature builds problem-solving, balance and confidence.

Why nature play matters

Play-based, child-led learning in nature isn't a break from "real" learning — it is the learning. In line with the Early Years Learning Framework, our Beach Kinder mornings build the skills that set children up for school and life:

  • Confidence & resilience — managing small risks, trying again, and feeling proud.
  • Curiosity & problem-solving — testing ideas with sand, water and natural materials.
  • Physical development — balance, coordination and big-body movement.
  • Connection to place — respect for the Broadwater, its wildlife and our community.
"Our little one comes home full of stories from Beach Kinder — sandy, happy and bursting with questions. You can see the confidence growing every week."

A typical Beach Kinder morning

  • Sun-safe check — hats, sunscreen and shade set up together.
  • Open-ended exploration led by the children's interests.
  • Small-group investigations — counting shells, building, storytelling.
  • Reflection and a freshly prepared morning tea back at the centre.

Safety first, always

Every Beach Kinder session runs within our National Quality Framework practices — careful ratios, active supervision, a SunSmart routine, and educators who all hold current Working With Children checks. Safety is the quiet foundation that lets the adventure happen.
